We recently had the incredible opportunity to visit Alain Vaes, an amazing surrealist painter with an extraordinary imagination, in his two-story studio in Peekskill, NY. The experience was nothing short of magical as we filmed a video capturing his process, atmosphere, and vibrant personality while he worked on his latest piece, "Abyssmal," Acrylic on canvas, 60x48 inches.
Vaes’s studio is a world in itself. It’s a space filled with a sense of whimsy and wonder, where books line the shelves and random objects—sculptures, art tools, and relics from past projects—seem to tell their own stories. Every corner of the studio reveals something new and fascinating, reflecting his unique vision and inspiring creativity.
The heart of our project was to film Alain as he painted, nearing completion on "Abyssmal." We captured intimate moments of quiet focus, watching as his hands brought to life the surreal underwater landscape of imaginative interwoven creatures, in vivid colors. His approach to painting is meticulous and precise. To complement this quiet intensity, we carefully curated a soundtrack of ambient music, the same music Alain listens to while he works. The atmospheric soundscapes paired beautifully with the visual elements of his studio and his creative process, creating an experience of immersion in both sound and sight.
We were also able to incorporate footage of the many whimsical objects that surround Alain during his creative process—items that might seem random but speak to his artistic world and sensibilities. In the video, we aimed to evoke an artistic style that mirrors his work and the music, emphasizing subtle movements a closeup focus on detail. The result is a visual story that draws the viewer into the tranquil and imaginative environment where art and inspiration meet.
It was an honor to be present in such a creative space, to witness Alain’s genius in action, and to capture the essence of his work. We hope this video reflects not only the art but also the atmosphere of wonder that Alain Vaes brings to his creations. We look forward to spending more time with Alain to see where his imagination leads him on future projects!
